Femme Fatale: Women Hunters

Gone are the days when hunting is a sport and an occupation exclusive to men while women remained at home tending to the children and waiting near the home fire. Although hunting may have been a male dominated activity in mankind’s distant past, the present years welcome women hunters who enjoy the activity. In fact, many women hunters join a hunting forum of their choice, read hunting magazines dedicated to female hunters and even join hunting clubs.

In a survey published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the year 2007, it has been showed that about 10 percent of the nation’s 12 and a half million hunters consist of female hunters. The number of women hunters continues to show significant growth among the youngest female hunters. The National Wild Turkey Federation has commissioned a survey that claimed 95 percent of women approve of ladies going hunting and the fact that 15 percent of these women already owned a hunting license is a good evidence of their approval.

A survey released by the NSGA or the National Sporting Goods Association suggests that there had been more than 70 percent increase in the number of women hunters who use firearms in hunting over the last five years. This proves that women are not just the gatherers of the game anymore but are now among the skilled target shooters hunting in the wild.
